HERITAGE HOUSE SCHOOL

THURSDAY 9TH FEBRUARY - SCHOOL IS OPEN  TO ALL PUPILS

The Upper School

The Upper School department is for  pupils aged between 11 and 19 with severe learning difficulties, complex needs and communication difficulties including autism.

Some classes use the TEACCH approach or elements of it, to support pupils with autism. This approach uses a physical and visual structure to support pupils to be as independent as possible.

All pupils are allocated support via a keyworker system and follow individualised timetables to ensure that they fulfil their potential and that their special educational needs are met.

All pupils have access to either our own hydrotherapy pool or use of the local leisure centre pool and facilities. A range of specialist resources are available including an Art room, Food Technology room, music room, ICT resources and Sensory rooms. Individual timetables incorporate therapies such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy (including Sensory Integration therapy)  and Speech and Language Therapy.

As pupils progress through the school, the focus is on teaching them to be as independent as possible. For some pupils this will be teaching them to make and communicate choices about their own needs and preferences. For others it will be to enable them to make simple snacks and use community facilities as well as managing their own leisure time.
